Re: "Normal" therapy is all wrong! « Result #2 on Jun 27, 2008, 9:33pm »
Believe it or not, I have to agree with this. I didnt already know this but thank God James therapist did. Shes a good one, Im grateful fo that. In the beginning, after months of the waiting game after nerve grafting, we thought he was moving his arm, but he was compensating. It was depressing to hear that, but true.

Priscilla & James « Result #3 on Jun 27, 2008, 3:35pm »
Hey ! Im here finally. Im Priscilla, mom to James. Hes 15, has a RTBPI from an atv accident in November 2003. We live in Bakersville, NC. Im married to Robbie and we also have a daughter Jessica whos 22 and a nursing student. James has had 3 bpi surgeries so far. His injury involves all the nerves, pherenic nerve, c5 & c6 were stretched, torn but not avulsed from the spine, c7,8, & t1 were avulsed. So, yeah, its difficult but we are managing the best we can. James is definitely one more tough kid, but he is a kid, so he has his poor me moments, but he does so privately, maybe thats good, maybe not, but Im his mom, I can tell. His surgeries have been nerve grafting in 2004, about 5 months after his accident, then a trapezius transfer along with a tensor fascia lata graft for shoulder stabilization and third most recently a gracilis muscle transfer along with an interposition tendon graft from the FCR into the ECRB. So, for the most part I understand his injury and what has been done to help and how. Which leads me to here in which in a few months he will be starting biofeedback. Im looking to learn and share. I appreciate Kate having this site. Shes pretty knowledgeable and I hope to learn alot from her as well as the rest of you. James has had alot of therapy through the years, in which he has been very passionate about and hope he will the biofeedback as well. He wants to be able to use his arm so badly and now, being a teenager, I think he has some bets with his friends that when he does get use of it, (they doubt it its been so long) that if he does they say he can punch them with it and say I told you so ! LOL ! Teenagers ! Hes determined ! He does quite well one handed, he was right dominent but now uses his left. He figures out a way for about everything. He will be a junior in high school this fall, and he enjoys fishing, clay shooting, hunting. He was on the Sharpshooters team this year and we were litterally floored at what he can do ! Seeing as how hes so interested in clay shooting and exhibition shooting and is good at it, it has been set up that when he gets over tis surgery he will be taking lessons from one of the worlds finest champion clay shooters and we are so proud of that ! I cant wait ! His dream of playing football is no longer and Im so glad hes has found another passion to persue ! I think its important. Looking forward to this biofeedback journey and helping James be the best he can !

Re: Joshua - three year old user LOBPI « Result #4 on May 19, 2008, 11:09am »
I got our 1-channel Myotrac back to use with Joshua again. I had bought a 2-channel Pathways, but I think it is just too complicated to use for a toddler. I'm not sure about an adult. The Myotrac really has such nice, sensitive, SIMPLE feedback! And the electrodes are much less sticky than with the Pathways (which are a very sitcky gel) and Joshua just would not tolerate them. I "de-stick" the Myotrac electrodes a little before we start, by applying them to my arm and pulling them off a couple of times. They can also be wrapped on, the adhesive is only for holding the little metal pickups in place.
So this time I wanted to try the Myotrac to see if I could help Joshua 'get in touch' with his abdominal muscles. Joshua is 4 years old and has never been able to do a sit-up. All his therapists have worked on this with him, but he really never seems to strengthen in this area. His current therapist has been making it "easier" for him by propping him up on a wedge or pillows to help him get started, on the theory that a partial rep will help the muscles strengthen to eventually do it from fully lying flat.
So Joshua can sit up if he is propped up partially to start with. But if he isn't propped up leans to the right and pushes himself up with his non-BPI arm. Well, I was suspicious of this and eager to get back to using the Myo with him. I figured since diaphragm muscles are often impacted, what about those upper abdominals? I didn't actually look up the nerves on that one, so that might be completely wrong. But regardless of the reason, I've developed a strong suspicion he wasn't using his upper abs at all. For one, he tries to do sit-ups with his head tilted backwards in sort of a "reverse crunch" position. Not comfortable... and really making it impossible to get started from lying flat.
So I put the myotrac pick-up right below his breastbone on the very upper abs and let him play with it while he was doing situps. He would start to activate those muscles but when he partially rolled to push himself up with his arm, they turned right off! And if he starts from being propped they barely come on at all. So his compensation - or being partially started - means he never exercises those upper abs. So of course they won't get stronger!
With the Myotrac I can change his focus to getting the yellow light instead of just getting into a sitting position by whatever means available. So he was able to get some negative feedback from rolling to push himself up with his arm (turns down the myotrac) and lead him to concentrate on getting the yellow light, which made him slow down and really "push" the muscles. We were able to end the first session with 5 "maintain the yellow light" crunches, and his form looked great and he was really holding the "crunch".
I think this is going to really help. His core strength has always been such a problem, and now I really have something to focus in and get that helped!

Re: QUESTION? « Result #5 on May 19, 2008, 11:02am »
Actually, there has been very little activity anywhere. Seems everyone was busy with the holidays or moving... or gave up.
We just got Joshua's Myotrac back. I had bought a 2-channel pathways but it was really just too complicated to use with him (he's four!) and he got more mixed up and frustrated than anything. We got his Myotrac back and are working with it on his abs.

Hello everyone,
I came across this message board and the ubpn.org site a coulpe of months back and found it very inspiring reading about your experiences with the Myrotrac. But now I am in the same situation as Carolyn, in fact both in terms of the LOBPI and wanting to get updates on how everyone's doing with their Myrotracs.
I fully understand your concerns regarding privacy, but I would really appreciate hearing more about your experiences as I am currently in the process of requiring a Myrotrac (or the likes of) myself.

Still stuck with cocontractures. I have started seeing a new PT and mentioned to her that there are a group of us using biofeedback but we are all pretty stuck with the cocontractures. She is going to think on it for me and see what happens. We may try it during a therapy session at some point. I am not as dilligent as I want to be with the biofeedback, or any of my therapy for that matter. School is really busy right now and I just havent had the time.
When I ahve a little more time (this week I hope!) I will try again to find something I can do to break my patterns. Thats all I have for now. Amy
Dear Myrotrac "Staff"/"users", It seems all activity on this site lately has been in the "closed" Staff Discusion Forum. I'd really like some general type of updates of how it is going for each of you. It's OK, I wouldn't expect any specifics that would be uncomfortable for each of you.i.e. pictures.
You can send me an email , if you like, instead of posting.
